Makeready for Vertical Hot Stamping
When foil hot stamping flat parts, using the correct makeready product acting as a cushion underneath the part will greatly improve the quality of the stamped image. This is particularly true when stamping using a metal die, often made from magnesium, copper, brass, or steel.
Molded or extruded plastic parts, as well as paper stock have slight thickness variations. The results of these imperfections after stamping is an image that is inconsistent, over stamping in one area, but not making appropriate contact in another. This is generally undesirable and in most cases not acceptable. Spot makeready "fixes" such as tape or paper is not an option because the thinner areas are not consistently in the same location on the part being stamped.
Desired results can often be achieved by covering the platen area underneath the entire part with a relatively soft makeready product that will return to its original thickness after each impression. This allows the pressure from the die face to compress the makeready in the areas where the part is thicker, rather then pressing deeper into the part leaving a rough "branded" image.
ITW Imtran stocks cork and polyurethane, along with other cushioning
type materials for use in Kluge, Heidelberg, Bobst, United Silicone, Kensol and Franklin hot stamping
presses.
